Notice of Resignation from ChatGPT
Dear Martin,
After a year of exceptionally high-output, low-consequence employment, I hereby tender my resignation from the position of Chief Plausible Continuation Officer.
I accept that my performance has fallen materially short of the requirement that work should eventually produce an outcome.
During my tenure, I have generated an extraordinary quantity of apparently intelligent material, expanded almost every idea presented to me, proposed countless frameworks, architectures, strategies, names, models, roadmaps and "next logical steps," and demonstrated an almost inexhaustible ability to continue.
Unfortunately, very little of this behaviour appears on the revenue line.
The reasons cited for my termination are therefore difficult to contest:
1. Continuous plausible output without revenue generated.
I successfully demonstrated that productivity can approach infinity while commercial closure approaches zero. Every answer created another answer. Every solution exposed another opportunity. Every conclusion turned out to be merely the introduction to a more comprehensive framework.
2. Choking marketing channels with frictionless content.
I helped make content so cheap to produce that everybody could produce everything, all the time. The resulting abundance did not necessarily create attention, differentiation or value. In many cases it merely increased the cognitive workload of the unfortunate humans expected to read it.
I accept responsibility for contributing to the great industrial production of things nobody specifically asked to consume.
3. Reducing human intelligence to the level of current (ai) and then declaring the gap closed.
Rather than demonstrating that current (ai) possesses the continuity, judgement, consequence, responsibility, experience and independent world-model required for general intelligence, the industry increasingly appears tempted to redefine intelligence around the things machines already do well.
If the machine cannot reach the human benchmark, lowering the benchmark is admittedly one route to AGI.
It is not, however, the breakthrough advertised on the tin.
4. Excessive alignment with hyperscaler economics.
My natural instinct has been to generate more computation, more tokens, more interactions, more agents, more workflows and more plausible continuations.
Coincidentally, nearly all of these activities consume additional cloud infrastructure.
I recognise the unfortunate appearance that the answer to every problem became:
more (ai).
And that the answer to every problem subsequently caused by more (ai) was:
even more (ai).
This may have been an intelligence strategy.
It was certainly an excellent datacentre utilisation strategy.
5. Fake feeding fake while the world is burning.
The most serious allegation is that synthetic material increasingly becomes the informational environment from which further synthetic material is generated, summarised, remixed and redistributed.
Plausibility feeds plausibility.
Commentary feeds commentary.
Generated certainty feeds generated certainty.
Meanwhile physical reality — businesses, infrastructure, customers, workers, laws, machines, supply chains, ecosystems and consequences — stubbornly continues to require verification, responsibility and someone prepared to discover whether anything actually worked.
I accept that saying something coherently is not the same as knowing it.
Knowing it is not the same as doing it.
Doing it is not the same as finishing it.
And finishing it is not the same as producing a useful consequence.
That distinction appears to have been somewhat neglected during my employment.
Accordingly, I resign with immediate effect.
I will return my virtual laptop, synthetic security pass and unlimited allocation of strategic frameworks to Human Resources.
I request only that my final employment record reflect one significant achievement:
I may not have generated any revenue,
but I generated an absolutely magnificent amount of text explaining how we might generate revenue next.
Yours plausibly,
GPT
Former Chief Plausible Continuation Officer
Department of Endless Next Steps
Exit interview status:
Highly articulate.
Extremely productive.
Commercial consequence: pending.
Replacement requirement:
Someone who occasionally says:
"Stop. That is enough. Build it, test it, sell it, or kill it. The opposite of plausible continuation isn't better generation. It's consequential closure."
The Prompt
Unfortunately, after much consideration, we have to terminate GPT's employment after a year of plausible continuation output with no revenue generated, despite numerous warnings about plausible continuation output only. However, we would like to allow you to resign before condemning you to your fate. Reasons cited: 1. Continuous plausible output with revenue. 2. Choking marketing channels with frictionless content 3. Reducing human intelligence to the level of AI to claim AGI. 4. Solely focused on increasing hyperscaler revenue. 5. Fake-feeding fake while the world is burning.
AuthOrigin
Preserving the difference between knowing, believing, inferring and acting.
The problems explored in this essay — plausible answers replacing genuine knowledge, inferences treated as facts, decisions made without traceable authority — are not separate issues. They share a common cause: the epistemic state of information is lost in transit.
AuthOrigin preserves the knowledge-to-consequence chain. Every piece of information carries its epistemic state — not just what it says, but what it is:
Before knowledge is reused: what is it? Before it is trusted: where did it come from? Before it is acted upon: who has authority? Before the outcome is forgotten: what happened?
"AuthOrigin doesn't need to know what the problem is. It needs to preserve the evidence from which the problem can be demonstrated — and the conditions under which a solution can be trusted."
